We're excited to announce that the Institute of Digital Games is looking for excellent candidates for new PhD and Post-doc positions. If you're interested in working at the Institute of Digital Games, the centre for research and education in game design, game analysis, and game technology at the University of Malta be sure to see what we're offering. Our work is at the forefront of innovative games research. We explore games and play, uncovering new playful and generative possibilities in game design and technology. We delve into everything games can teach us about ourselves.

Our multidisciplinary academic team spans computer science, literature, game design, philosophy, media studies, and social sciences.

Since the foundation of the institute in 2013, we have been involved in a number of funded research projects. Together, we have published over 130 academic publications including conference papers, journals articles, books, and book chapters.

PhD Position - Game Research and Education

Regarding the PhD student position, we are looking for excellent candidates with a background at the crossroads of artificial and computational intelligence, data science, computational creativity, affective computing, and machine learning. In particular, we are interested in candidates with a good grasp of as many of the following areas as possible: deep learning, general artificial intelligence, data visualization, data mining, human-computer interfaces, affective modelling, player modelling, procedural content generation, computational creativity in games, game analytics. Industry experience with game design and game development will be considered advantageous.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position - Applied Game Research and Project Management

Regarding the Postdoctoral Fellow position, we are looking for excellent candidates with a good grasp of as many of the following areas as possible: deep learning, general artificial intelligence, data visualization, data mining, human-computer interfaces, affective modelling, player modelling, procedural content generation, computational creativity in games, game analytics. The responsibilities of the post-doctoral fellow include applied research, project and team management, authoring project deliverables, etc

Game AI Research Group

The researchers would work under the umbrella of the Game AI Research Group of the Institute of Digital Games. The AI research group at the Institute of Digital Games, does its work on the cutting edge of AI research pushing the boundaries in the field with innovate work being published in leading computer science journals such as IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Journal. In addition to academic research supported by European and national funding, the Institute’s AI research group also works together with industry giants Ubisoft and exciting new start-ups like Goedle.io.

Researchers of the Game AI research group have had their work awarded at numerous conferences and competitions in the field of computer science, particularly as relates to: artificial intelligence, machine learning, affective computing, creative computing, and player modelling.
